Square footage doesn't cool a wine cellar.
BTU load does.
Most homeowners — and unfortunately many contractors — size a cooling unit off room area alone. That approach ignores the variables that actually determine how hard a compressor has to work, and it’s the single biggest cause of oversized, undersized, and short-cycling wine cellar cooling systems.
Sizing by square feet
“My room is 200 sq ft, so I need a 5,000 BTU unit” ignores everything that actually drives heat gain into the cellar.
- Leads to units that run constantly and still can’t hold temperature
- Or units that short-cycle, causing humidity swings that damage corks and labels
- Doesn’t account for insulation, glass, or sun exposure
- Ignores ceiling height and true cubic volume
Sizing by BTU heatload
A proper heatload calculation measures the actual thermal load your cellar generates, in BTU/hr — the only number a compressor cares about.
- Accounts for wall & ceiling insulation R-value
- Factors in glass doors, windows, and sun exposure
- Includes room volume, not just floor area
- Matches ambient temperature outside the cellar
Ceiling height changes total air volume even when the floor space stays the same.
Wall, ceiling, and vapor barrier quality determine how much heat penetrates in cellar.
Glass walls and doors gain heat far faster than insulated walls, especially in direct sun.
The temperature and humidity of the space surrounding your cellar changes the load significantly.

*FAQ's about cellarpro VS Series*
Frequently Asked Questions
The CellarPro VS (Variable Speed / Through-the-Wall) Series is a commercial-grade, self-contained wine cooling system designed for medium to large residential and commercial wine cellars. It installs directly through a wall and can be configured as a self-contained unit or fully ducted (using optional duct kits) to supply cold air and exhaust heat remotely.
Â
VSi Models (Indoor Exhaust): Engineered for installations where heat is exhausted into an interior room (such as a mechanical room, basement, or adjacent room) that stays between 45°F and 85°F.
VSx Models (Exterior Exhaust): Designed for installations where heat is exhausted outdoors. VSx models come equipped with built-in frost protection and variable-speed EC fans to withstand extreme outdoor temperatures (down to -20°F with optional heaters, and up to 115°F).
CellarPro VS Series models cater to cellars ranging from 200 to 2,000 cubic feet, depending on cellar insulation (R-13 to R-19 recommended) and glass exposure:
CellarPro 2000VS: Ideal for small to medium cellars (up to 400 cu. ft.)
CellarPro 3200VS: Designed for medium cellars (up to 800 cu. ft.)
CellarPro 4200VS: Suited for larger cellars (up to 1,500 cu. ft.)
CellarPro 8200VS: Built for high-capacity, large residential or commercial wine cellars (up to 2,000 cu. ft.)
Yes. While the VS Series operates out-of-the-box as a self-contained, through-the-wall cooling unit, it offers optional fully ducted capabilities. You can duct either the fresh air intake, the cold air supply into the cellar, or the hot air exhaust away from the unit. Ducting allows you to isolate unit noise outside the living area and keep the cooling hardware completely hidden from sight.
CellarPro VS-ECX models utilize energy-efficient EC motor fans. These variable-speed motors offer up to 55% greater energy efficiency, whisper-quiet operation, and dynamic speed adjustments that maintain ultra-precise temperature control (55°F–58°F) and relative humidity levels (60%–70%) without harsh temperature spikes.
Most standard CellarPro VS models operate on a 115V / 60Hz dedicated circuit. However, 220V / 50-60Hz international versions (such as the 2000VSi 220V and 4200VSi 220V) are available for commercial applications or international installations.
CellarPro units come with a manufacturer-backed warranty that includes:
5-Year Warranty on the internal compressor against defects in materials or workmanship.
2-Year Warranty covering all parts and labor for unit repairs or component replacements.
If installed strictly as a through-the-wall unit, professional HVAC licensing is not always required because the system comes factory-sealed and fully charged with refrigerant (plug-and-play). However, if you plan to install optional ducting, exterior duct kits, or dedicated electrical lines, hiring a certified contractor or wine cellar builder is strongly recommended to ensure proper airflow, heat load calculations, and warranty compliance.
